Have you slapped a friend across the face today?
I'm not talking physically slapping them though they may prefer that you did. I'm talking about insulting them by slapping them across that face with your opinions. Has it ever occurred to you that when you forward a constant barrage of forwarded internet political schlock to their email in-box that it really is a slap in the face? The biggest offenders by far are the "Rush Limbaugh huggers" and huggers of other nut level extreme right-wingers around the US. I'm not talking about actual "political conservatives" who are in reasonable abundance (thankfully) but the hard right-wingers who live a life of hate, religious bigotry and racism either open or veiled. They function in the full knowledge that only they have every single answer and that they have the responsibility to point out daily to the seriously unenlightened rest of us just how stupid we are since we do not share their beliefs. They are completely incapable of grasping that many of us are fully able to read, watch TV, listen to the radio and study the facts on our own and make decisions all without the benefit of forwarded internet schlock.
For a long time I have called my self an independent. I do tend to lean to the left but I pick and choose my opinions based on how I feel about each matter. I do not accept or reject a matter based upon the position of any political party. While I may lean left I do not call my self a Democrat. On the other hand I do not "just" not call myself a Republican. I strongly deny, reject and refuse that label very strongly. I certainly do not want to be identified in any manner with that grievous trio consisting of a George, a Rush and a Dick. Apparently I am in good company. I recently saw a national survey where only 22% of those surveyed would admit to being Republicans. They were not just denying the last administration but being a Republican at all. I hope the GOP can change directions enough to get back on the non-nut course again, we do need a two party system.
Some may feel insulted here by what I am saying but there is a huge difference. I am expressing myself in an open public forum and I am not directing this message to any one individual person. I am not telling you that "you" are stupid... I'm saying that "they" are stupid.
I have been a farmer all of my life and for some reason people just assume that since I am a farmer that I must be a Republican. Not only am I not a Republican or a Democrat, I personally know a good number of farmers that are strong Democrats. Still people walk up to me knowing that I am a farmer and start saying terrible things about Obama, just assuming that since I farm that I am on their side. Sadly much of what they say about Obama is really very thinly veiled racism. Sometimes not so veiled... I cannot understand why these simple fools assume that since I am white that I must be as stupidly prejudiced as they are. How pathetic... These morons are an unbelievably tiny and noisy minority especially since they are only a small percentage of the small 22% mentioned above.
Also sadly I still get a lot of forwarded internet schlock from friends (former friends?) and even some family (even harder to stop) and few of them know that I simply have ceased to even open the forwarded schlock emails that they constantly send me. Sorry but I just can't get excited about being slapped across the face again... Think before you hit "send".

Very well said, Francis. I am also a political independent, but very offended by the vitriole against Obama of a personal nature that I get frequently in mass e-mail messages.
Can't we disagree with someone politically without attacking he/she in such a manner?
And, yes, I agree that I think much of it is what you wrote here:
"Sadly much of what they say about Obama is really very thinly veiled racism. Sometimes not so veiled..."
