Ol' Whatshisname

Whatever Happened To "Ol' Whatshisname"? Every once in awhile someone asks me that question.

The exchange usually goes something like this:

"Whatever happened to ol' whatshisname?"

"WHO?? Who do you mean??"

"You know, that guy from the newspaper."

"WHICH guy from the newspaper?"

"That CANADIAN guy, he was the publisher... or something."

"Oh, HIM! I heard he went to California, but frankly, I don't really care where he went."

Well, I recently received information from a very good friend on the whereabouts of that Canadian guy. So for all of you who may have asked that question during the last three years, and because he "touched" the lives of so many people locally, I thought I'd share the following three updates from the Associated Press which are all readily available on the internet.

Story No. 1: Publisher Fired Over Sexual Battery Accusations

MANTECA, Calif. (AP) - The owner of the Manteca Bulletin says it fired its publisher following an internal investigation that began after an employee complained about him.

In a statement Tuesday, the daily newspaper says Paul Mahony was terminated on Feb. 10 after more than three years as publisher. The newspaper says several Bulletin employees have filed complaints related to Mahony's actions with Manteca police, but did not disclose the nature of those complaints.

The publication plans to cooperate with the ongoing police investigation. Charles Hill Morris, regional manager with Morris Multimedia, which owns the Bulletin, says, "We took the action in the interest of our employees."

Mahony could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.

Story No. 2: Ex-Manteca Publisher Charged With Fondling Woman

MANTECA, Calif. (AP) - Prosecutors have charged the former publisher of the Manteca Bulletin with misdemeanor sexual battery.

The complaint against 54-year-old Paul Mahony was filed Monday in San Joaquin County Superior Court. It accuses him of fondling a 43-year-old woman on Feb. 5.

Mahony was fired from the newspaper on Feb. 10 after serving more than three years as its publisher. The newspaper says several Bulletin employees had filed complaints with police about Mahony, although it has not disclosed the nature of those complaints.

Mahony faces a maximum of one year in jail, if convicted.

He has not been arrested but must appear in court to face the charge March 9.

Story No. 3: Manteca Ex-Publisher Pleads No Contest To Fondling

MANTECA, Calif. (AP) - The former publisher of the Manteca Bulletin has pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery over allegations that he fondled a female employee.

Paul Mahony, 54, entered the plea through his attorney Friday in San Joaquin County Superior Court as part of a deal with prosecutors. He won't serve jail time but must pay a $250 fine, stay away from his accuser and serve three years probation.

Prosecutors reduced Mahony's charge from sexual battery to just battery in exchange for his plea.

Mahony was accused of fondling a 43-year-old female Bulletin employee on Feb. 5. He was fired days later.

The newspaper said several Bulletin employees had filed complaints with police about Mahony, although it did not disclose the nature of those complaints.

Mahony didn't appear in court Friday.

A recent TSN publisher arrested for fondling a women at work and a recent TSN editor arrested on drug charges.

What does that say about our local newspaper and its ownership?
