June 7, 2010 (Shelbyville, IN) - The Shelbyville Common Council passed a resolution to use a portion of racino revenue reserve funds for distribution to local nonprofit organizations. The five-year resolution calls for an initial piddling allotment of $25,000 in 2010, then additional piddling allotments of $35,000 each year through 2014. The Blue River Community Foundation will participate with city officials in the distribution process. In exchange for its participation, the foundation will receive an administrative fee. After the resolution passed unanimously, one Common Council member was quoted in the local newspaper as saying, "I'm disappointed because I think we could and should be giving more to our nonprofits."

Great question....The reason I voted yes was that we needed to give the non profits something. I am in favor of giving more money and I wanted to show support to give them what we could give them. In discussions with other council members that was the most we were going to agree on. I didnt want to vote no and come across as I dont support the non profits. It was an attitude of I will give what I can get, which will never be enough.

Article comment by: These people disgust me

The City Coucil members have proven they are people with hearts as cold as steel in January.

I'm glad Val Phares made his comment of protest, but why did he go ahead and vote for the resolution?

This is fast becoming a hard-edged, heartless town.

How do you council members sleep at night?
