Welcome To Skateville
The city's new Skateboard Park appears to be on schedule despite the Indiana Highway Department's current resurfacing project on Harrison Street. That's good news for area teens who are anxiously awaiting completion of the new public skating facility.

The exact cost of the new skateboard park is unknown because initial plans and original funding called for the renovation of downtown sidewalks and the replacement of Public Square lighting fixtures. It is not known when the project morphed into construction of a skateboard park, nor is it known who authorized the change of plans.

However, one thing is certain, sidewalk surfers will soon be kickflipping, ollying and performing death-defying leaps over moving semi-trailers in Downtown Shelbyville.

When completed, the skateboard park will consist of four quadrants encircling Public Square. Each quadrant will have new concrete sidewalks, two large brick fun boxes and ramps at each end of the quadrant. Do the math and you'll quickly see that Shelbyville's public skate park will boast eight skating fun boxes and eight ramps all circularly connected by hundreds of yards of smooth concrete. Make no mistake, this will be a world-class facility!

The southeast quadrant is almost finished and has already been tested by local skateboarders who shared comments about their experiences.

"Dude! That's an amazing skateboard park!" - Razor J.

"Those mini-ramps give major air!" - Ken-zee L.

"Awesome grind rails on the brick fun boxes!" - Wilfred M.

"We'll never need to wax the grind rails because the city trained pigeons to continually coat the fun boxes with a white slippery substance. That's totally trippy!" - Jed I.

All agreed the new skateboard park is a splendid example of what a local government can accomplish with improvised planning and several hundred thousand dollars worth of brick and cement. The young skaters predicted Shelbyville's skate park will become a mecca for skateboarders throughout the midwest.

Grand opening festivities are in the planning stages and it's been rumored that pop star Justin Timberlake will attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony. There is also increasing speculation that Tony Hawk will be on hand to dedicate the new park.

City officials have not yet decided on a name for the public facility. Some city leaders want to call the park 'Intelliskate', but others prefer to follow the hospital's lead and select a name with a French derivative. As a result, one city council member suggested 'Le Parc des Patineurs de L'adolescence, which means 'Teen Skater's Park.'

If you would like to help select a name for Shelbyville's new skateboard park, please feel free to forward your suggestions.

To Otis: Another reader suggested the topic, then I witnessed skateboarding activity on Public Square after business hours.
P.S. I don't always get them either.

Since the man was slighted so badly, I feel that we should do something in his honor. How about the Tony Lennon Memorial Skate Park? Subtle, yet significant.
