Psst! Meet me in the lobby!
It's been another record year for lobbyists in Indiana.

Lobbies representing special-interest groups spent over $5 million from May 2008 through April 2009 in order to buy access to our Indiana legislators. Many reports are still trickling in (that means they are late) so the $5 million total is likely to increase during the next several weeks.

Indiana lawmakers aren't inclined to police themselves, consequently, reporting requirements about certain portions of their lobbyist gifts are virtually nonexistent. But other reports identify the amounts that are considered to be direct gifts to legislators.

Shelby County's legislators hauled in some dandy freebies during the 2009 General Assembly.

Jean Leising (Republican State Senator - District 42) collected dinners, meals, refreshments and tickets worth $683.05 from lobbyists Hill-Rom Company, IPALCO and the Insurance Institute of Indiana.

Sean Eberhart (Republican State Representative - District 57) scooped up lunches, dinners, meals, entertainment and tickets (including NCAA) worth $822.54 from lobbyists IPALCO, AT&T, Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Baker & Daniels.

Bob Cherry (Republican State Representative - District 53) racked up meals, dinners, entertainment, event tickets, Ryder Cup tickets and Ryder Cup gifts valued at a whopping $2,615.22 from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, IPALCO and Duke Energy.

By the way, lobbying is not illegal, it's merely ugly. Remember, these are not campaign donations, they are gifts. And I know our legislators often bristle at any inference that they can be "bought" for the price of a dinner, or a ballgame. But they bring it upon themselves by accepting the gifts. However, a simple solution exists.

Just say "No."

There are some legislators who do not accept lobbyists "gifts' in Indiana.

Obviously, not the ones we vote on here in Shelby County.

Oink! Oink! Oink!
